Honoring the life of Fahmeen Faruki
The Fahmeen Faruki Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors an unforgettable parent and educator. Fahmeen Faruki was the mother of Yasmin and Anya Faruki, two exceptional alumni who graduated from Alexandria City Public Schools respectively in 2012 and 2018.
Fahmeen died tragically from ovarian cancer just five weeks after an unexpected diagnosis in summer 2021. Her abrupt and untimely passing has been a massive shock and devastation for her family and the Alexandria community.
Fahmeen served our community as a professor and counselor at Northern Virginia Community College for over 15 years. Throughout her tenure, she helped students not only strive for academic excellence, but also navigate personal challenges ranging from domestic abuse, changes in sexual identity, financial hardship, immigration issues, and homelessness.
As a single mother, she devoted her life to her children and their educational paths. For over ten years, she was a host mother to foreign exchange students, helping young people around the world study English and adapt to American culture.
In the words of one student who almost dropped out of college in 2021, “I truly did not know how I would continue with the semester, but Ms. Faruki jumped into action as always with her arsenal of words of encouragement. She is a gem and angel on earth among us. She has a big heart and kind soul.”
To honor a truly unforgettable woman who believed so passionately in education, the Fahmeen Faruki Memorial Scholarship will award $3,000 to a graduating woman of color to assist with the costs of attending a college of their choice.
About The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria:
The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria works to ensure that ALL Alexandria students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, have the opportunity to attend college. At today's Alexandria City High School (formerly TC Williams), two out of three students live at or below the federal poverty level. The COVID pandemic and its far-reaching socioeconomic impacts have hit local families with need the hardest--the very same families we serve. Just one scholarship can mean generations of financial stability and success for an Alexandria student and their family. Want to help make a difference? When we all give what we can, we can create a scholarship and help change a student's life.
The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria was established in 1986 to help ensure that ALL bright, hard-working students can afford college. The SFA provides college advising, financial aid advising, college readiness support, and of course, college scholarships. Thanks to the generosity of the Alexandria community, the Scholarship Fund awards over $1.1 million in scholarships to Titan graduates each year. Most of our scholarships range from $12,000 to $40,000 over four years and can often mean the difference between a student being able to afford college, or simply staying home.
